Notice to Attorney, AG in vehicles tax case

The Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued notice to Attorney General of Pakistan and Advocate General Punjab on a petition challenging levy of new taxes on vehicles.
The court issued this order on a petition moved by a local lawyer. He contended that the government had imposed number of taxes, including registration fee on car and vehicles. Vehicle owners are burdened with heavy taxes but the government instead of spending taxes on the welfare of the people, use them for its own protocol.
The government had also failed to provide free medicine at hospitals while seeking public donation for service 1122 through advertisement in newspapers.
He stated billions of rupees were allocated for Metro Bus in the budget which exposed government intention. He prayed the court to set aside the new taxes including fee on vehicles.
DUNGI GROUND: The LHC sought reply from the Punjab government for converting Dungi Ground of Gulberg into theatre. The counsel told the government converted the ground intentionally into a theatre despite the fact that a full bench of the LHC had ordered for the ground. He said the Punjab government also did not file detailed reply before the court. He would withdraw his petition if it was not decided. On it, the court sought reply from the Punjab government and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
LDA DG summoned: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday summoned Director General of Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Ahad Cheema for not comply with its order regarding allotment of plot to a citizen.
The petitioner Munir submitted that the court had ordered the LDA to allot him a plot. However, the authority ignored the order, he said and sought contempt proceedings against the director general.
Justice Shahid Jamil directed Managing Director Housing Department to look into the petitioner’s case and decide it within one month. However, the judge directed the LDA chief Ahad Cheema to appear in person on July 8 and explain his position on charges of contempt.
During the last week, another judge of the LHC had issued contempt notice to Mr Cheema for defying court’s orders.
