Women’s household work counted nowhere in national data

Islamabad : Pakistan’s Labour Force survey conducted on present gender wage gap estimates that women carry out around 2.5 times the amount of unpaid care work as compared to men globally which worth around US$10 trillion.

According to the survey, women’s household work was counted nowhere in the national data.

The Pakistan stands at number 143 in economic participation and opportunity available for women, educational attainment is at 136, health and survival 140, and in terms of political empowerment at 95.It further says that the gender pay gap persists almost in all sectors of the country.

The rural women play a key role in agriculture sector and are a mainstay for growing rural farming and livestock but are not given proper wages, the survey mentioned.

“The male agricultural workers earned Rs300 per day while female agricultural workers earned Rs170 per day in addition women earn only 32.82 per cent in skilled agriculture while men earn around 67.18 per cent,” it said.

Meanwhile, women devote more hours per day than men however the private school mafia in small towns and urban areas pay only Rs200-250 to women per day, it added.

The survey suggested that the government should have a proper mechanism to implement and then monitor those constitutional rights and ordinances.

The government ought to take note of the gender inequality prevalent in all socio-economic domains in the country.
