KARACHI: Drug peddlers have been threatening the captain of Pakistan hockey team Muhammad Imran for several days despite registration of an application in the police station.
Imran, when contacted, said a few days back he had registered a complaint in the Liaquatabad police station against a gang involved in selling drugs in the area.
The police took action and arrested five persons who were later released on bail, he said.
A man named Waqas came along with a couple of his accomplices to his residence in Lahore and brandishing weapons threatened that if his family did not stop complaining he would face dire consequence, he added.
Imran said he was busy preparing for the Rio Olympics qualifying rounds these days in Islamabad due to the training camp and could not pursue the case properly.
He said he was worried about the safety of his family. He further said that police provided security to his family on Sunday, deploying policemen at his residence.
Imran, who represents Pakistan Army in domestic tournaments, said he had approached the Punjab government and appealed to the chief minister Shahbaz Sharif to take notice of elements threatening citizens.
About Pakistan’s chances of qualification for Rio Olympics, Imran said the Green-shirts would go all out in the matches and would not take any match lightly.
He said all teams except Australia were equal in strength.
He said Pakistan gained a lot in the recent tours of Australia and South Korea and the experience of those matches would help them in Belgium.
He said that three players, who had been playing professional leagues, Fareed Ahmed, Rizwan Senior and Rashid Mehmood, had joined the team, which would boost the side’s capability.
