Sajid, Saim lead as Sindh Amateur Golf tees off

KARACHI: Sajid Khan and Saim Shazli were tied for the top slot on the leader-board as UMA 19th Sindh Golf Championship 2019 teed off here at the Karachi Golf Club on Friday.

Both Sajid and Saim carded identical scores of one-over par 73 for a slim one-shot lead in the prestigious championship being hosted by the Sindh Golf Association (SGA).

A total of 132 players teed off in the opening round of the championship on the Red and Blue courses of the KGC. A total of 66 amateurs, 38 seniors, 18 juniors and 10 ladies were seen in action on the opening day of the three-day championship.

In the main amateurs’ event, the experienced Sajid Khan of Pakistan Navy carded 73. Saim was also bracketed him on the first place with a similar score. The leaders were followed by Zubair Ahmad (74). He was followed by the trio of Mangla’s Syed Raza Ali, Lt Cdr Shehzad Noor of KGC and Owais Intisar of DHA. Five amateurs – Zohaib Hussain, Hamza Shikoh, Zohaib Asif, Adnan and M Sharif -- were tied at 76.

In the seniors’ category, Captain Azhar Iqbal was leading by a solitary stroke after carding 75. He was followed by Lt Col Zahid Iqbal at 76. At 77 was KGC’s Sohail Kareem Rana (78) followed by Cmdre Ghazanfar Abbas at 79. They were followed by the trio of Asad I.A Khan, Col Mansoor Akram and Dr Imran Ghayoor at 81. The seniors’ category is a very keenly-contested affair this year as several prominent amateur players have recently turned senior. The championship will conclude on Sunday (tomorrow).
