KARACHI: The Pakistan Billiards & Snooker Association (PBSA) is all set to organise the Jubilee Insurance World 6-Reds and Team Championships here in a couple of month’s time following clearance from the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF).
Alamgir Anwar Shaikh, President, PBSA, informed ‘The News’ here on Saturday that they have received the IBSF report which allows them to continue their preparations for the twin international snooker events due to be staged at Hotel Movenpick from August 6 to 15.
“Around 200 cueists from 25 countries, besides as many as 32 international referees and 50 delegates, are expected in Karachi for the twin events for which we are in the process of making befitting arrangements in line of our tradition of providing high-class hospitality to the visitors,” the PBSA President revealed.
“It’s a tough proposition to hold international events with the available resources at our disposal but we are confident of meeting the challenge once more,” he hoped.
“The clearance from the IBSF will help us in maintaining the same intensity of work and we are optimistic about the turnout in the upcoming events in which five gold medals will be up for the grabs in men’s 6-Reds, women’s 6-Reds, men’s team event, women team event and masters team event,” the PBSA President explained.
The PBSA has received a communication from the IBSF vice-president, Maxime Cassis, who had visited the city few weeks ago to assess the situation.
He has submitted a positive report pertaining to the security situation after having visiting the various locations of Karachi during his two-day stay in the metropolis.
“Karachi is safe to host the Jubilee Insurance World 6-Reds and Team Championships for men, women and masters. I am happy with the arrangements made by the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) and hope most of the countries would send their players to compete in the event,” the France-based IBSF vice-president wrote in his report.
It is interesting to note that it was Cassis who had defeated Alamgir Shaikh by four votes for the post of IBSF vice-president in the biennial elections held in last November.
