All the lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party have been elected unopposed to the 22 committees of the Sindh Assembly, including 20 standing committees of the house.

The unopposed election of the PPP legislators to these committees means that there would be no polling for the constitution of the standing committees today as per the schedule earlier notified for the purpose by the secretariat of the provincial legislature.

The unopposed election was possible due to the boycott of the polling process by the three opposition political parties in the house -- Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Muttahida Qaumi Movement- Pakistan and the Grand Democratic Alliance.

The opposition parties have been demanding that the chairmanship of the Public Accounts’ Committee of the Sindh Assembly should be given to the leader of opposition in the house. The PPP lawmakers didn’t submit nomination papers for the rest of the 14 standing committees in view of the boycott of the poll process by the opposition parties. There are a total of 34 standing committees of the house.

The MPAs of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan and the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal have also been elected unopposed to the standing committees. Apart from the 20 standing committees, PPP lawmakers have also returned unopposed to the finance committee and the Public Accounts Committee of the Sindh Assembly.

The newly returned members of the finance committee are: MPAs Ghanwer Ali Khan Isran, Dr Lal Chand Ukrani, Dr Sohrab Khan Sarki, Farhat Seemen, Muhammad Sajid Jokhio, Syed Abdul Rasheed, and Ghulam Qadir Chandio.

The Sindh Assembly speaker will be chairman of the finance committee and the finance minister will also be a member of the committee.
