“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. These Martin Luther King Jr’s words ring true today for our Pakistani society. Fairness, equity and justice have become rare in this land. There are several irritants in the way of both procedural and substantive access to justice. Rulers appear to be devoid of the courage to innovate and to invest in the country’s judicial system.
If reports are to be believed, there is no protection of rights, at different stages of the legal process, from the time of reporting a crime to the police, to following the grant of a remedy by the court to make certain that the decision is enforced. Who will create a culture of justice when officers of the court whom we call lawyers request for adjournments on one pretext or another?
