Workshop on role of NGOs in social uplift of disabled persons

Islamabad : National Council of Social Welfare (NCSW) organised a one day public awareness workshop titled ‘The Role of NGOs in the Social Uplift of the Disabled Persons and Our Social Responsibilities’ in collaboration with Directorate General of Special Education, says a press release.

NCSW Chairman Dr. Nadeem Shafiq Malik presided the workshop while Dr. Maryam, Technical Adviser on Disability and Injury Prevention, WHO was the chief guest.

Representatives of Civil Society and Federal Ministries/Departments, Prominent activists of disabled persons and other stakeholders attended the workshop. Dr. Nadeem Shafiq Malik, Chairman NCSW said in his presidential address that the present government is committed for the welfare of disabled persons. Pakistani disables are playing positive role in the development of Pakistan in every field.

On the direction of Federal Education Minister, a new Disable Welfare Policy is being prepared. The Chairman further said that it is our collective responsibility to facilitate the disabled persons through involving them in family and community at large. All possible channels at community as well as media should be utilised to create public awareness about the nature and types of disabilities and the need for community support for their identification as well as rehabilitation of disabled persons.

Dr. Maryam, said that it is the responsibility of state to provide a comprehensive range of facilities for persons with disabilities from prenatal care through education, vocational training, employment, use of information technology, through outreach programme and support during adult life through self employment. It is good initiative taken by the present government for preparation of the Disabled Policy.
