Taking notice of the incident in which policemen misbehaved with a couple at Sea View, the Karachi police chief has ordered the dismissal of the officials.

A video clip of the incident went viral on social media after it was posted by a citizen. The footage shows the policemen harassing a couple at the popular picnic spot. The recording also shows the wife being manhandled.

After watching the video of the incident, Addl IGP Amir Ahmed Shaikh immediately ordered the suspension of the cops and initiated inquiry against them under the direct supervision of South Range DIG Sharjeel Kharal.

Shaikh said the policemen’s bad behaviour with the public will not be tolerated at any cost, adding that police officials should adopt public-friendly behaviour with citizens. Finding all the four officials involved in the incident guilty, the inquiry team said in their report that ASI Zulfiqar and police constables Ahmed Khan and Qurban have been detained.

ASI Zulfiqar was posted at Security Zone-II and PC Khan and PC Qurban at the Boat Basin police station. The fourth cop, PC Zahid who was posted at the police headquarters in Garden, is still at large. All the officials have been dismissed from service.

The dismissal order of ASI Zulfiqar reads: “ASI (K-1783) (now head constable) Zulfiqar, son of Muhammad Rafiq, of I Company, Security-II, Karachi was deputed on Pakistan Super League duty.

“He left his place of official duty without permission or intimation and went to the Clifton beach for ulterior motives. At the Clifton beach he malafidely and deliberately manhandled and harassed a couple and asked for bribe.

“This act on his part shows gross misconduct and irresponsible behaviour that is unbecoming of an officer, rendering him unfit for police service. This was enquired and he was heard in person. His oral explanation was found unsatisfactory.

“He also failed to clear his position on the charges levelled against him, as he created a bad image of the police department. In view of the above facts, the above-named defaulter ASI (now head constable) was found guilty, and there is sufficient evidence available against him.

“Therefore, taking ex-parte decision against him, he is hereby awarded major punishment, dismissal from service, as specified under Removal from Service (Special Powers), Sindh Police Efficiency & Discipline Rules 1988. His kit articles should be deposited.”
