Three-member body formed to probe death of elderly man

Additional Inspector General of Police Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Monday formed a three-member committee to inquire into the death of the general secretary of the Gadani Ship-breaking Yard Association.

The committee would be headed by the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Crime Investigation Agency and the West Zone DIG, and the senior superintendent of police investigations would be part of the team.

The Karachi police chief visited the family of 69-year-old Abdul Kareem Jan and expressed his grief over the death. He assured the family that strict action would be taken against those responsible.

Shaikh said the case was suspicious and the inquiry team would probe the case. “The forensics of the cell phones of the deceased and his sons are also being conducted to trace more suspects, including the complainant, involved in the incident,” he said. “We will also investigate any source or bribe, if any, that forced the police to conduct an overnight raid.”

He said that there would be more reforms in the police department and the police would not be allowed to conduct raids without having concrete evidence.

Earlier, the family of the deceased had claimed that he died due to manhandling by the police during their raid, while the law enforcers said the deceased died of cardiac arrest.
