PESHAWAR: As many as 99 terror attacks took place during the current year in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa causing the killing of 14 policemen and 34 civilians till May 18.
Official statistics made available to The News on Friday showed that additionally two personnel of the Frontier Constabulary and four soldiers of the army were also killed during the period. On the other hand, the authorities said, 17 militants were killed in different actions by the law-enforcement agencies all over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
During these incidents, 33 policemen, five FC personnel, one soldier and 67 civilians sustained injuries. Two attackers were also wounded in separate actions.An official of the Counter Terrorism Department disclosed that compared to 99 terror incident during the first four and a half months of the year, 221 incidents were reported last year, which is 122 more than those reported during 2015.
“Similarly, the number of casualties during the current year is 71 compared to 205 in 2014. As many as 41 policemen, 34 soldiers, four FC personnel and 104 civilians were killed in various attacks during the same period last year,” the official said.
He added that the number of those injured in attacks during the current year was 108 compared to 537 in the same period in 2014.Apart from the military operations in the tribal areas, many credit the actions being carried out by the CTD as one of the major factors in ensuring lesser number of attacks and casualties.
The officials of the CTD are on the hit-list of the militants for the same reason. One of its deputy superintendents of police (DSP), Bahadur Khan, was shot dead on Wednesday in Gulbahar locality in the provincial capital.
Officials of the CTD have been directed to remain alert as there are fears of more attacks on the personnel of the force in the coming days.A source said that the slain DSP could have escaped the attack had he been accompanied by at least one gunman as he was missed by the attackers in the first round of fire.
