DENGUE continued to haunt citizens as larva has been found from hundreds of places especially indoor sources from various areas of the provincial metropolis during the first five months (till date) of the year 2015.
Sources in City District Government Lahore (CDGL) revealed that other than outdoor sources such as tyre shops, junk yards, under construction buildings and nurseries, dengue larvae was also found in indoor sources such as flower pots, refrigerator trays, water tanks and etc in several houses of various city localities.
Sources said during the first five months of this year, dengue larvae were found more from indoor sources, which showed that massive dengue awareness campaigns should be launched immediately to educate the citizens.
Data collected from Environment Protection Department (EPD) revealed that EPD teams found a total 1,126 indoor and outdoor sources of dengue larvae, which included 25 from Wagah Town, 122 from Gulberg Town, 46 from Samanabad Town, 127 from Shalimar Town, 144 from Aziz Bhatti Town, 207 from Nishter Town, 134 from Allama Iqbal Town, 205 from Data Ganj Baksh Town and 116 from Ravi Town. On the other hand, the CDGL checked over 1.4 million indoor sources and over 0.5 million outdoor sources and cases were registered against 102 persons after discovery of dengue larvae from their homes.
Sources said that 243 cases of larvae positive were reported in Wagah Town only, which included 234 cases from indoor and nine cases from outdoor sources. In Wagah Town, 691 tyre shops, 240 junk yards, 48 under construction sites and 28 nurseries were inspected and 25 dengue larvae sources were removed. In Gulberg Town, 725 tyre shops, 254 junk yards, 43 under construction sites and 142 nurseries were inspected and 122 dengue larvae sources were removed.
In Samanabad Town, 616 tyre shops, 396 junk yards, 30 under construction sites and 18 nurseries were inspected and 46 dengue larvae sources were removed, In Shalimar Town, 729 tyre shops, 243 junk yards, 30 under construction sites and 47 nurseries were inspected and 127 dengue larvae sources were removed. In Aziz Bhatti Town, 651 tyre shops, 290 junk yards, 23 under construction sites and 53 nurseries were inspected and 144 dengue larvae sources were removed.
In Nishter Town, 696 tyre shops, 403 junk yards, 44 under construction sites and 69 nurseries were inspected and 207 dengue larvae sources were removed. In Allama Iqbal Town, 853 tyre shops, 458 junk yards, 103 under construction sites and 151 nurseries were inspected and 134 dengue larvae sources were removed. In DGBT, 759 tyre shops, 327 junk yards, 52 under construction sites and 17 nurseries were inspected and 205 dengue larvae sources were removed. In Ravi Town, 565 tyre shops, 329 junk yards, 75 under construction sites and 42 nurseries were inspected and 116 dengue larvae sources were removed.
EPD officials said that dengue larva was recovered from indoor sources from Haji Pura, Salamat Pura, Siraj Pura, Shahgohar Abad, Datta Park, Eid Gah, Khizar Abad, Karol Bazaar, Nafer Abad, Novan Wala Chowk Pakistan Mint, Sultan Mehmood Road, Naqshbandi Bazaar, Ghandi Shah Road, Barkat Pura, Aziz Park, Bilal Colony, Daroghawala, and Gulberg Colony in Wagah Town.
Provincial Secretary EPD while talking to The News said the department had accelerated its anti-dengue awareness campaigns in all offices, commercial centres and houses and 100 percent implementation of preventive measures should be ensured. The secretary said that cases should be registered under dengue laws against those not following the preventive measures. He asked the citizens to be vigilant and avoid accumulation of fresh water in their homes and offices. He said the citizens should check their refrigerator trays, flower pots, water tanks and keep these dry to avoid dengue breeding.
Meanwhile, Health Department officials said that 31 fogger, 125 plastic machines and 40 machines of steel body for carrying out IRS are in the working condition which are checked on daily basis. They said the government was making the all-out effort to combat dengue.
