LAHORE Punjab Law and Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman has said to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the major focus of the government is on protecting people’s health by strengthening Primary Health Care and Disease Preventive Programmes. He said the government was focussing on treatment of chronic and fatal diseases like thalassemia. He said the government was encouraging NGOs and educational institutions for organising awareness events against fatal diseases like thalassemia. Talking to delegations of NGOs working for the treatment and awareness of thalassemia on World Thalassemia Day, Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman said the Punjab government provided 19 per cent additional budget for the provision of health services. He said by increasing the health budget, the present government ensured modern health facilities, free medicines and air-conditioning in general. The reformatory initiatives are being introduced in education, health and other social sectors which resulted in providing relief to the masses and improvement in their living standard and the present government is keen to uplift socio-economic development of rural masses, he added. The minister said under the directives of the Punjab CM, the public sector hospitals were being made modern and Rs 60 crore were being using for dialysis facilities to the poor kidney patients. He said huge amount of Rs 8.75 billon was being sent on the provision of free treatment and medicines to the poor and destitute in public sector hospitals of the province.
