Minister’s brother killed, seven others hurt in Lyari grenade attack

The provincial katchi abadis minister’s brother was killed and seven others including four cops injured in a grenade attack in Lyari on Friday night.
Police said some men attacked provincial minister Javed Nagori’s office on Shah Waliullah Road in Lyari with a grenade, killing his brother, 35-year-old Akbar Nagori.
SI Muhammad Saleem, constables Jahanzeb Iqbal, Sheheryar and Tehseen and Imran, Zafar Iqbal and Muhammad Hussain also suffered injuries.
They were all taken to the Civil hospital where Nagori succumbed to his injuries. Police and hospital official said the rest of the men were out of danger.
DIG South Dr Jamil Ahmed described the attack as an attempt to target police. He added that police had conducted a raid in Lyari and seized a large cache of arms. “The attack was carried out in response to that action.”
However, Pakistan People’s Party office-bearers countered the claim, saying that it was aimed at targeting the party members present at the minister’s office.
PPP Karachi general secretary Najmi Alam said the police official’s statement was made in haste and distorted the actual facts.

He too suspected that the attack was aimed at targeting cops as the Lyari police had carried out an operation against gangsters earlier in the day. “Members of the Sheraz Comrade gang are the prime suspects in the case,” he added
“We believe that the gangsters were looking for a target and when they saw police vehicles and personnel outside the office of the provincial minister, they hurled the grenade and escaped. Unfortunately, Akbar Nagori, who usually doesn’t sit at the office at such late hours, was present there,.”
Quoting doctors at the Civil Hospital, the SP Lyari said grenade splinters ruptured a blood vessel in Nagori’s body, causing excessive blood loss while he was being taken to the hospital.
The case of the grenade attack was not lodged with the Kalri police station till the filing of this report as officials were waiting for a complainant to register their statement.
The DIG South said an operation had been launched in Lyari to arrest the attackers.
Police investigators said Sunny Baloch, Taimur Niazi and Kamran, members of the Sheraz Comrade gang, were involved in the attack and raids were being conducted to arrest them.
Chief minister Qaim Ali Shah and information minister Sharjeel Memon condemned the attack and ordered police officials to immediately arrest the people responsible for it.
