Poverty, illiteracy behind crime: report

UNEMPLOYMENT, poverty and illiteracy are the prime factors that instigate a person to commit crime while political and family factors also contribute to the increasing criminal activities in country.
This is researched by Syed Yasir Mahmood Gillani, Deputy Director (P&D) at GC University Lahore. He has been investigating the causes of increasing property-related crime like robbery and theft etc through his doctoral dissertation. He is doing his research work under the supervision of Prof Dr Muhammad Wasif Siddiqi.
According to the research, he finds the relationship between crime and unemployment which has always been a prime concern for everyone in society. Crime rate is alarmingly increasing in Pakistan. The newspapers are full of crime stories creating panic among public. The life and property of every single individual seem to be in danger due to rampant increase in criminal activities in the country. A lot of research has been undertaken in this regard in different regions and countries. The crime history is as old as history of mankind. The first crime was committed by Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve, when he murdered his brother Abel out of jealousy. Yasir Mahmood through his research highlighted that the cancerous growth of crime had affected every society. No country is so far capable of controlling crime despite having the state-of-the-art systems of security. During the research, he investigated the crime and unemployment relationship by interviewing the prisoners and under-trials of all jails in the Punjab. He sought permission from Inspector General of Prisons and visited 31 jails of the Punjab ranging from Attock to Rajanpur. The total prisoners population he targeted is 47,915.
During the research, Yasir Mahmood closely interacted with jail inmates and the prison staff while he collected data through a questionnaire. He said an effective judicial system along with speedy disposing of the cases of the under-trials could reduce the criminal activities. The delay in justice is adding monetary pressure on government. He appreciated the kind and humane behaviour of the jail staff towards inmates. The jails Superintendents are very much supportive in addressing the prisoners’ problems. Sajid Baig, Superintendent Central jail, Mianwali showed him the prison cell where Ghazi Ilm Din Shaheed stayed the last night of his life. A monument is constructed at the cell.
PU results: Punjab University has announced results of MSc Physics Part-I & Part-II Supplementary Examination 2014, MA Mass Communication Part-II Supplementary Examination 2014, MA Political Science Part-II Supplementary Examination 2014 and MSc Chemistry Part-II Supplementary Examination 2014. Meanwhile, the PU Examinations Department has issued a schedule for submission of admission fee and forms for BS Home Economics Annual Examination 2015.
