Fielding its candidates from Sachal and surrounding Sindhi-populated neighbourhoods, the Sindh United Party (SUP) has decided to test the waters by taking part in the upcoming general polls in Karachi.
Led by Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah, grandson of prominent Sindhi nationalist leader GM Syed, the SUP has fielded its candidates in the province’s different parts, including Karachi. The party has awarded a ticket to its Karachi president, Mehboob Abbasi, from the PS-100, a Sindh Assembly constituency comprising areas of Sachal and Gulzar-e-Hijri.
For the National Assembly’s seat NA-242, the party has chosen prominent Sindhi language singer and producer Bedal Soomro. On both seats, the Pakistan Peoples Party, the Mutahida Quami Movement-Pakistan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal have fielded their candidates.
Abbasi said that entire Sindh was being destroyed due to corruption, awful governance by the PPP and unemployment, and that the people of the province were living in poor conditions and hunger. “The people of Sindh are tired of the provincial government’s corruption and exploitation,” he said.
He said that most of the areas falling in the PS-100 and NA-242 constituencies were deprived of basic civic facilities and residents were forced to live in filthy conditions. “The PPP and the MQM have destroyed the city by looting its resources,” he said. He said that the SUP had fielded its candidates from over 15 National Assembly and 40 Sindh Assembly constituencies across the province.
