ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah will hold a meeting today (Friday) to finalise the name of caretaker prime minister.

According to sources, the name of caretaker PM would be announced after reaching consensus and the process could take a day or two more.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has given him authority to finalise the name of the caretaker prime minister.

Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari gave full authority to Khursheed Shah to appoint caretaker PM. Party leadership has said whatever name is finalised by Khursheed Shah and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for caretaker PM will be acceptable.

The prime minister and opposition leader had discussed six names and both are agree on one name that would be made public soon.

The PTI had forwarded three names if its choice for the caretaker prime minister — ex-governor State Bank of Pakistan Dr Ishrat Hussain, ex-chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani and ex-commerce minister Abdul Razak Dawood. While the name of the ex-governor State Bank of Pakistan Dr Shamshad Akhtar and ex-governor Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa Shaukatullah, who hails from Fata were also in consideration for the caretaker setup.

Last time, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah had named NAB Chairman Justice (R) Javed Iqbal but now the prime minister and the PML-N leadership had serious reservations over the NAB chairman following the allegations of Money laundering on ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

But at the same time, the question arises whether the other major opposition party — Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf — will agree on the name of the caretaker prime minister as it is a major stakeholder in the upcoming general elections.

According to PTI sources, so far opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah was made no formal consultation with the PTI on the name of the caretaker PM and party is closely monitoring the situation and will take future line of action once name is made public.
