ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Senator Lt. Gen. ® Abdul Qayyum was elected again Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Defence Production.

In its meeting, the committee here elected Senator Abdul Qayyum as its chairman, who was proposed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak and seconded by Senator Nuzhat Sadiq of PML-N.

In his opening remarks Senator Abdul Qayyum said the fast evolving regional and global geo-strategic environment had changed the security paradigm. “This makes structural and technological improvements in defence production industry unavoidable. We have been focusing on research and indigenisation in the field of defence production,” he noted.

He explained that it was heartening to note that Pakistan’s indigenous defence production skills have now started earning international recognition, especially in the field of state of the art small arms, artillery and tank ammunition, top of the list is APCs and tanks, missiles and fighter jets. The area of oversight of the committee includes Defence and Export Promotion Organisation, Pakistan Ordnance Factories, Wah and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.
