The five-day Asian-Pacific Postal Union Executive Council (APPU-EC) meeting started here on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony. On the occasion, a postal stamp was also unveiled.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of APPU-EC meeting, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad congratulated Pakistan Post for organising Asian-Pacific Postal Union Executive Council (APPU-EC) meeting.
He said that in view of globalisation and rapid changes in technology, post offices in the region will have to work with missionary zeal. APPU-EC is an important gathering in which delegates from 32 countries are participating. He said that this meeting will focus on strategies for providing effective services in postal sector.
The minister noted that there are rising public expectations regarding postal services, urging strong cooperation among members of APPU-EC for quality postal services.
Sheikh Aftab said that presently there is increasing demand for communication services and quality postal services are imperative.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Secretary Ministry of Communication Aurangzaib Haq said that APPU-EC will provide us an opportunity to sit together to find ways for quality postal services. He said that APPU-EC will address the concerns being faced regarding postal services.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General Universal Postal Union (UPU) Bishar Abdirahman Hussein said UPU binds us together to share ideas and ensure collaboration regarding postal services. He said that technology has changed the world and it requires us to be very efficient.
The DG UPU also stressed upon strong collaboration among member countries for providing efficient postal services.
Chairman APPU-EC and Secretary General APPU-EC also spoke on the occasion.
Delegates from 32 countries of Asia-Pacific working for a common concern are participating in the Asian-Pacific Postal Union Executive Council (APPU-EC) meeting. It is pertinent to mention here that Asian-Pacific Postal Union Executive Council meeting is being held for the first time in Pakistan.
The purpose of the Asian-Pacific Postal Union Executive Council meeting is to enhance relationship among the member countries and encourage collaboration in the field of postal services. The countries whose delegates are participating in the APPU-EC meeting include: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Fiji, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Lao People’s Dem. Rep., Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal , New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Independent State of Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga (including Niuafo’ou), Vanuatu, Vietnam and others.
