Appointment of NCSW chairperson demanded

Islamabad: Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Human Rights Shazia Suhail Mir on Thursday called upon the government to speed up the process of the appointment of chairperson National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW).

According to the judgment, announced on February 6, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) set aside the notification of Chairperson NCSW Khawar Mumtaz. The seat is vacant since then. Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Human Rights Shazia Suhail Mir was speaking at briefing organised by the NCSW to introduce the parliamentary secretary with activities of the commission.

Parliamentary Secretary visited different sections of the Commission and had an interactive discussion with the Commission’s staff. She was received by the NCSW Secretary Samina A Hassan who briefed her about the status, activities and planned initiatives of the Commission.

Parliamentary secretary took keen interest in the NCSW activities and gave suggestion to extend these activities to the grassroots level. She suggested the commission to visit central jail, Darul Aman and other women related facilities of her constituency Gujranwala.

She stressed for reaching out to rural areas for enhanced political participation of women. She said that despite all efforts, there are pockets of areas where women are not allowed to vote. She also noted that women are not allowed by the male members to exercise their choice and opinion while voting.

NCSW Secretary Samina A Hassan briefed the parliamentary secretary about the activities planned by the commission before and after the upcoming elections for enhanced political participation.
