The educationists and students should aim at serving the nation especially the deprived section of society.
This was the advice given by State Minister for Education Baligh-ur-Rehman while addressing students and faculty of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on Friday.
He observed that students are Pakistan’s asset and ambassadors of the nation and stressed “there should be clear vision and the education must be imparted to develop a noble ideology.”
Referring the 18th amendment, the minister maintained that after its approval, the education sector has been devolved to provinces, and like Germany the education in Pakistan was now a provincial subject.
In this regard, he informed the gathering that a meeting of chief ministers, education ministers and others held a few months had resolved to form a National Curriculum Council, which has been notified last month.
“The meeting decided to finalise minimum education standards and curriculum for primary to class XII, as far as national heroes, national poets, national writers and other personalities are concerned.”
Baligh-ur-Rehman all provinces have sent names of three members each for the council to make decisions collectively, “which is essential for national solidarity.”
On providing funds the SMIU, the minister said he will personally talk to the quarters concerned and will apprise the prime minister, planning and development commission and others so that the needs of this great institution were met.
Regarding university’s development scheme, he mentioned that it will be approved in annual development programme for the year 2015-16.
Baligh-ur-Rehman reaffirmed the commitment that the government will make the SMIU a model institution and asserted that the journey for betterment of this historic institute been initiated.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor SMIU Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh in his welcome speech said the federal government should provide funds and facilities for the university, “which is Alma mater of father of the nation.”
He said out of Rs 370 million required by the university, the higher education commission (HEC) had only provided Rs 70 million.
Dr Shaikh appreciated the efforts of the Sindh government, particularly chief minister Qaim Ali Shah, for its financial support and approving the charter of university and hoped that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif being an education-friendly person would also provide funds for this historic institution.
