ISLAMABAD: The two detained activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) allegedly connected with the murder of Dr Imran Farooq will not be handed over to the British authorities in the name of ‘national interest’, highly placed sources told The News.
There are complications, said a well reputed key functionary of the government when asked about the possible handing over of the two suspects.Imran Kazmi, resident of Malir “B”Area near Saud Abad Police Station, and Mohsin Ali Syed, another Karachi resident of Nazimabad area, were picked up by the intelligence officials from Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport shortly after they landed in Karachi while coming from Sri Lanka, in the winter of 2010 almost a week after the murder of Dr Imran Farooq on September 16 in London.
“We were not communicated about these suspects rather it was a direct intelligence to intelligence cooperation,” confirmed an ex key functionary of the then PPP government who was privy to the developments of that time.
The source said Pakistan is yet to have an extradition treaty with the UK, which is also a hurdle in this extradition. The sources added that all the relevant investigation record of the two captive activists would be handed over to the UK whose intelligence authorities already have the idea about the whereabouts of these captives.
On the other hand, an intelligence source claims that one out of the two MQM captives, “Imran” and “Mohsin” has died during the captivity however a key civilian government functionary denies this.
The sources claim that the alleged activists were picked up while arriving from Sri Lanka. Both the activists are alleged to kill Dr Imran Farooq themselves directly in London and soon after that they took a flight to South Africa and after a short stay there they were on their way back to Karachi via Sri Lanka. However the British authorities were keeping an eye on their each and every moment.
The sources claim that the case of Dr Imran Farooq seems to have no future as there is no development yet, and the British authorities to date are after this case whose actual culprits are yet not known officially.
