PESHAWAR: Unidentified attackers shot dead a district leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Sardar Mohmand in the Yakatoot locality of the provincial capital on Wednesday.
“Sardar Mohmand was on foot when armed men opened fire on him with a 9-mm pistol and escaped,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations, Peshawar Dr Mian Saeed Ahmad told The News.
Sardar Mohmand was rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital but he succumbed to injuries.Media reports said the spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack and threatened to now target more members of the ruling party.
A source said the slain PML-N leader had received threatening calls for payment of extortion money. A case had already been registered at a local police station against a militant commander for hurling threats at him. The city police bosses suspended the station house officer of the Yakatoot Police Station for negligence after the killing. “The SHO was suspended after the target killing incident for his failure to maintain law and order in his area,” said Mian Saeed Ahmad. Police across Peshawar was alerted and the respective supervisory officers were directed to make arrangements within their area to counter such attacks. The SHOs were warned that action would be taken in case they were found negligent.
The target killing was the second in the city in two days. On Tuesday evening, target killers shot dead Samiullah Afridi, a former lawyer of the imprisoned Dr Shakil Afridi, in Mathra village on the outskirts of Peshawar when he was on way home in a car along with a relative.
