Basic endoscopy, colonoscopy workshop held at Holy Family Hospital

Rawalpindi : A two-day workshop on basic skills in Endoscopy, Colonoscopy and Advanced Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) organised by the Society of Therapeutic Endoscopy Pakistan (STEP) in collaboration with Rawalpindi Medical University, Centre for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CLD) and Pakistan Academic Group of Health Educators (PAGHE) UK concluded here at CLD, Holy Family Hospital on Friday.

During the 12th Basic Endoscopy and Advanced ERCP and EUS Workshop held from March 29-30, Vice Chancellor RMU Professor Muhammad Umar, Sitara-i-Imtiaz delivered the keynote lecture on basic skills of endoscopy and demonstrated state-of-the-art procedures for the participants.

Professor Bushra Khaar, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at CLD gave lecture on techniques of colonoscopy and handling different loops during colonoscopy procedures. She also demonstrated live colonoscopy in front of all participants and described the techniques involved.

As many as 20 participants who are qualified gastroenterologists and physicians from South and Central Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata) attended the hands on workshop apart from 10 local participants.

The directors of the course were Professor Muhammad Umar and Professor Bushra Khaar while Co-Directors of the course included Dr. Zahid Mahmood Minhas, Dr. Arslan Shahzad and Dr. Tayyab Saeed Akhter.

According to organisers of the workshop, the simulator used in the workshop was state of the art equipment which enabled the trainees to understand true anatomy and sensitivity of the procedures. It gives the same response in case of pain as a patient can feel in real life and a trainee can learn the procedure easily and understand to handle a real patient.
