‘Insight into Senate of Pakistan’ launched

ISLAMABAD: Former Senate Chairman and eminent jurist Barrister Wasim Sajjad has spoken of the supremacy of Parliament and impressed the need to follow relevant rules and regulations while transacting business of the august houses.

The former Federal Minister and renown intellectual, Nisar Memon, has maintained that Parliament is a supreme legislative authority, and its members had always given their best for the nation and country. They were speaking Saturday at a launching ceremony of book ‘Insight into the Senate of Pakistan’, written by former Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Nisar A Memon.

Eminent parliamentarians, diplomats, intellectuals and representatives of academia, civil society were prominent among others who attended the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, former Senate Chairman Wasim Sajjad appreciated the efforts of Nisar A Memon, who had contributed a unique book about in-depth working of the Upper House of Pakistan and apprised general public about the contributions of senators in legislation and performance of Senate Committees.

Former Senate Secretary Iftikhar Ullah Babar, in his observations, remarked that book is one of the best references of the rules of business of Senate and its constitutional obligations in connection with legislation process. Benazir Income Support Programme Chairperson and Minister of State Marvi Memon said that most people are not aware of the working of Senate in its true perspective, and it was the need of the hour that it could be elaborated accordingly. In this connection, the book Insight into the Senate of Pakistan has fulfilled the gap about the knowledge of Senate working, she added.

Shoaib Sultan of the Aga Khan Foundation said that book is an interesting account of Nisar Memon’s six years tenure in the Senate of Pakistan as a member of three Senate committees on Defence, Production and Water Resources. He has presented in chapter 3-7 a concise summary of the substantive work of these committees accomplished during that period on many important issues and problems. He wished that other parliamentarians will follow his foot prints and record their recollections and views for the guidance of future generation.

Hanan Abbasi said that Insight into the Senate of Pakistan was an eye opener Memon has laced the prosaic subject with personal anecdotes which makes it very interesting reading. The book is full of such objective reporting, he added. Maliha Jilani was of the view that Insight into the Senate of Pakistan is a knowledge sharing reference book which is inspiring to see the enthusiasm and fervour that is written large across all the pages of the book. He said that writer has made it lively to walk through the otherwise unknown corridors of Parliament, sessions of different houses, working of the committees and the wealth of information accumulated over the years from the working of various dimensions of parliamentary debates, legislations and resolutions.

It was further revealed that this is an effortlessly readable book interspersed between narration of personal experiences as a parliamentarian and education for the reader with the working of their public representatives. The issues of national security, water management and social services have brought to fore the efforts of parliamentarians have made to improve the lives of common citizens of Pakistan.

The author of book Nisar A Memon, in his closing remarks, expressed his gratitude to all those who had valued his efforts and said that he had just tried to play his role in recollection of his memories for the education and awareness of future generations. He said that Parliament is a supreme legislative authority, and its members had always given their best for the nation and country. Nisar Memon also acknowledged the cooperation and support of his colleagues and friends in compiling the book. He said that Pakistan is blessing of Almighty Allah, and it is our moral and social obligation to uphold the traditions and high standards of ancestor who had rendered great sacrifices for the creation of Pakistan.
