AUCKLAND: Last Sunday, Dale Steyn was left feeling as if he was the most helpless man in the world after hearing the news that a mountain fire back home in Cape Town was about to engulf his house.
“I’ve never been more scared in my life,” said Steyn, regarded as the world’s most feared fast bowler.
“The people looking after my house called me and said, listen, you’ve got five minutes because we’re evacuating. What do you want us to take out of your house?
“I’m sitting halfway across the world, and everything that I’ve ever earned or gotten in my life, every wicket, every ball, every bit of clothing in my 31 years is in that house. So it was pretty scary to think what do you tell this person? They’ve got five minutes to take everything out,” he told reporters here at Eden Park on Friday ahead of South Africa’s World Cup Pool B game against Pakistan on Saturday (today).
The South African pacer praised the Cape Town firefighters for their professionalism and bravery.
“It was a tremendous job by all those firefighters and the volunteers who put their lives at risk though they has never met me before. They were just kind of like throwing themselves at it and putting out those fires.”
Stonehurst Estate, where Steyn and several other South African cricketers live, is located on the Muizenberg Mountains where multiple blazes sprung on Sunday night, forcing the closure of three main passes and evacuation of people from the their home.
Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel also live in Cape Town along with Faf du Plessis and Jaques Kallis.
