The number of quarries in Buner has been increasing at a fast pace. The mining method which is being used for the extraction of minerals is blasting – the controlled use of explosives. However, this is badly affecting the region’s flora and fauna. Additionally, the carcinogenic nature of explosives, like dynamite, which are being used for blasting, has taken a toll on the lives of people.
An acute increase in the number of cancer cases has been reported in the areas which are exposed to radioactive rays emitting from open quarries. Alternative methods, including rock cutting, for mining should be adopted for a safer environment.
