Street Children Day today

LAHORE: On the eve of international street children day, students of street school showcased their singing, acting and dancing talents as they took a break from studies on Tuesday.

They were celebrating the day to be commemorated (today) Wednesday. The Street Children School has a total of 130 students in three campuses, which are located in Gulberg, Sabzazar and Cantonment, consisting mainly of street children who used to sell flowers, tissue papers and clean windscreen of cars on traffic signals to make a living.

The school has around 15 teachers who teach the students from 8am till 2pm. The students have been provided with uniforms, hygiene kits and shoes by the school, while they also get refreshment.Nagina used to help her mother as a maid before she joined the school. “My house is in the next street. Every day I walk to the school with my friends and really enjoy studying,” she said, while cheering for her class fellows who were giving a performance on patriotic songs. “My father wanted me to help him in earning our livelihood but I have always felt attraction towards books and literature. I love to read Allama Iqbal and paint in my spare time.” he said. Another student, Ali, who used to work at a restaurant, wants to become an astronaut in the future.

blood donation camp: The students and faculty members of Government College University (GCU) on Tuesday donated 120 pints of blood for children suffering thalassemia.

The university’s Blood Donors Society (GCU-BDS) in collaboration with Fatimid Foundation organised the blood donation camp. Government College University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah visited the camp and appreciated the efforts of GCU-BDS.

He called upon the organisers to ensure that the blood was transfused to the patients after proper screening. Faculty of Languages, Islamic and Oriental Learning Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Shahid highlighted the importance of blood donation for protecting lives. He appreciated the donation of blood by the faculty members.
