Austria opened its honorary consulate in Karachi on Sunday to strengthen its cordial ties and develop economic relations with Pakistan.
Austria has appointed Raja Babar Tajammul as honorary consul in Karachi, said a press release issued by the Austrian consulate general.
In this respect, a function, hosted by Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Brigitta Blaha and Honorary Consul Tajammul and his wife Tazeen Tajammul, was held.
The opening reception was followed by a musical performance by Renald Deppe, eminent clarinetist and saxophonist, who came from Vienna for the occasion.
Deppe played together with top Pakistani maestros Usad Nafees on the Sitar and Ustad Bashir on Tabla with Napa director Arshad Mahmood present in a fusion concert, true to the theme of the festival “Bridging cultures through music”, both at Napa and the Austrian consulate.
Austria and Pakistan enjoy friendly relations.
The government of Austria assisted Pakistan after the earthquake in 2005. It awards scholarships to Pakistani students to study at Austrian universities.
Honorary Consul Tajammul hoped to establish a continued cultural and trade interaction between the two countries.
The consulate function was attended by the diplomatic corps and the dean of the consul corps, Sindh, Dr & Mrs Ishtiaque Baig. Leaders of all political parties and eminent citizens also attended.
The reception was also attended by the head of trade mission, Richard Bandera, who is based in Abu Dhabi, and former head of trade mission who now heads European Union Office in the UAE, Dr Wolfgang Penzias.
The other guests included Amber Haroon of Dawn TV, Tahir A. Khan of TV One, Ghazanfar Ali of Indus TV, Mr & Mrs Imran Tajammul from Lahore, Bari Mian, Transparency International head Adil Gilani, Nisar Khuhro, Hussain Haroon, Akbar Liaquat Ali Khan, Tariq Islam, Mr & Mrs Javed Jabbar, Mr & Mrs Anwar Majeed, AG Majeed, Azam Kazmi and Bunto Kazmi and Ahmed Tabba.
