A leader of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) was among three persons killed in separate attacks in the city on Tuesday.
Maulana Shabbir Ahmed Haidri, 42, a member of the ASWJ’s Karachi Shura and the Korangi district president, was going with his friend on his motorbike to attend a meeting when attackers in a car showered him with bullets near Darul Uloom Korangi, police said.
SSP Junaid Ahmed Shaikh said: “Maulana Haidri was shot four times and died on the spot while his friend, Roshan Din, who is not associated with the ASWJ, was injured in the incident.” He said the attackers used a .30 caliber pistol in the shooting and police found empties of the weapon at the scene.
“The incident appears to be an act of targeted killing but we are investigating the killing from all other possible angles. Forensic analysis of bullet casings and other evidences would help us in ascertaining the motive behind the killing.”
A spokesman for the ASWJ, Umer Muavia, condemned the killing of Maulana Haidri, saying that the victim was a seminary teacher, who was murdered as part of the ongoing wave of killings of activists of his party in Karachi and other parts of the country. ASWJ leader Maulana Orangzeb Farooqi also condemned the murder, and said senior leaders and activists of his party were being killed in Karachi, but the government and law enforcement agencies were not showing any seriousness in stopping the bloodshed.
Software engineer slain
Unknown men on a motorcycle shot dead a software engineer in front of his young son when he was going to drop him at school in Federal B Area.
Chaudhry Muhammad Faisal, 35, a resident of Block 16 of FB Area, had gone to drop his child at school on his motorcycle when the attackers shot him 18 times with a 9mm pistol near the Water Pump Chowrangi and fled, SSP Central Noman Siddiqui said. The victim died on the spot.
Faisal had been working as a software engineer in Saudi Arabia for last three years and had recently returned home. The SSP said some personal enmity may have led to his murder.
Tailor killed
Alleged gangsters shot dead a tailor at his shop in Bihar Colony in Lyari.
Muhammad Waseem, 42, was working at his shop when gangsters approached him and shot him multiple times before fleeing. Chakiwara SHO Yasin Gujjar said criminals associated with the Baba Ladla gang might have suspected Waseem to be an informer as they warned after killing him that anybody giving information about them to law enforcers would meet the same fate.
