KARACHI: Pakistan on Friday lifted four bronze medals in the Greco-Roman style wrestling competitions of the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Mohammad Bilal (57kg), Abdul Wahab (61kg), Mudassir Hussain (65kg) and Umair Ahmed (86kg) secured bronze medals, Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) secretary Arshad Sattar told The News. “You know India have fielded two grapplers in each weight and that is why we are facing issues,” Arshad said. “Four of wrestlers out of eight have claimed bronze while we also expect a couple of more as Ghulam Ghaus (70kg) was scheduled to face a South African wrestler in the bronze medal fight tonight. Tayyab Raza (97kg) was to meet a South African in the bronze medal clash while Ahmed Butt (125kg) had to fight against an Indian wrestler in the bronze medal fight,” Arshad informed.
He said that Abdul Rehman (74kg) failed to get any medal. It is pertinent to mention here that the country’s seasoned wrestler Mohammad Inam is not featuring in the Greco-Roman style of wrestling. He along with the rest of eight Pakistani wrestlers will compete in the freestyle competitions to be held on Sunday (tomorrow). On Saturday (today) weigh-in for the freestyle slots would be conducted.
