The paramilitary force and the Korangi police have busted a gang involved in short-term kidnappings in the city and arrested three suspects.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Noman Siddiqui of the Korangi district told The News on Monday that on November 19 a citizen lodged a complaint saying that he was returning from his godown in PNT Colony in Korangi when some unidentified men kidnapped him at gunpoint and sped away.

Soon afterwards, the kidnappers took away his ATM card and withdrew some money. Later, they called his family and demanded more money, which they received through the Easy Paisa money transfer service. The total amount paid in ransom was Rs80,000. The kidnappers detained him for four hours before releasing him in a far-flung area of the city.

SSP Siddiqui said the complainant lodged another complaint with the Rangers’ Sindh Task Force and paramilitary soldiers and police jointly worked to resolve the case. On Monday morning, they carried out a raid in Korangi Industrial Area and after facing resistance arrested three suspects, identified as Nasir, Faizan and Anjum. During a search of their hideout, law enforcers seized Rs44,000 of the ransom amount, a Cultus car, three cellphones and as many pistols.

Nasir was an employee of the victim at his godown and the complainant had also suspected his involvement. The three also admitted to two more short term-kidnappings in Korangi and Malir Cantonment areas.

In Korangi they kidnapped a doctor in a similar fashion and freed him after getting the ransom money. Police contacted the doctor but he refused to file a complaint. However, in the Malir Cantonment incident, an FIR was lodged by a citizen, Riaz, who said his tormentors took him away in a Vigo jeep, but luckily he managed to release himself from their clutches. The gang allegedly used rented vehicles to kidnap people.
