KARACHI: The provincial government plans to hold Sindh Games early next year, a source told ‘The News’ on Thursday.
“The government is committed to holding the spectacle in Karachi, most probably in January,” the source said. “We have held a few meetings in this connection,” he added. The source said that the positive point was that Sindh Olympic Association (SOA) had also been taken into confidence by the provincial government.
“In all these meetings the government involved SOA’s senior officials and it’s great that finally the working relations between the SOA and the provincial government have been restored,” the source said. During the last few years SOA had been kept at bay by the Sindh government due to various reasons.
An SOA official confirmed that they had been taken into confidence by the provincial government before going for the 17th Sindh Games. “The new secretary sports of Sindh Dr Niaz Ali Abbasi is taking all stakeholders into confidence. It’s a good development,” the SOA official added.
Last time Sindh Games had been held in Hyderabad in 2012 when late Dr Mohammad Ali Shah was the sports minister and SOA head. Shah conducted five Sindh Games in a row in a record time of five years. But his successors failed to keep the momentum as no games have been held for the last five years.
