ISLAMABAD: In a daredevil robbery, armed gangsters looted the house of former acting president and Senate ex-chairman Wasim Sajjad at Shahzad Town after holding the inmates hostage at gunpoint in the wee hours of Thursday.
The dacoits barged into the farmhouse of Wasim Sajjad in Chak Shahzad, held five members of the family including the ex-acting president, his wife, son, sister-in-law and a nephew, hostage and took away cash in Pak rupee and foreign currency, gold ornaments and other valuables worth ten to twenty million rupees.
The gangsters held the family hostage for about two hours, ransacked the house, collected cash and valuables and left at about 5.15am, the police sources said. The police authorities reached the scene and viewed the situation and collected circumstantial evidence.
A member of the family while talking to this correspondent, said that four dacoits equipped with guns and daggers, jumped into the premises of the farmhouse from a vacant plot, cut iron grills of veranda and broke into the room of Wasim Sajjad at about 3.30am, adding that they held him and his wife hostage at gun point and asked for keys of the cash locker. Meanwhile, his elder son Barrister Ali Wasim, who is practicing in Lahore and has come to meet his parents, after feeling some mysterious activities in the room, knocked at the door but the gangsters held him too, while the gunmen held two other persons including his sister-in-law and a nephew hostage and tied some of them with ropes. They collected cash in Pak rupee, UK pound and US dollars, 150 tolas of gold ornaments, wrist watches and mobile phones worth about millions of rupees, Mr Sajjad said adding that they took away a licenced gun with them.
“We have been living in the farmhouse (No 12-A) in street-6 at Shahzad Town for the last 15 years and observed minor and major criminal activities during our stay,” the member of the family maintained. Security comprising FC and Rangers personnel was provided to Wasim Sajjad as former president in former regime following a decision but the present government withdrew the security according to Interior Ministry decision that says, “Additional security measures may be adopted for the ex-president and Senate former chairman if desired by him or in case circumstances required.”
He said that the government later provided security for the house of former acting president comprising police personnel who were either absent from the duty or sleeping at the time of incident. He said that Wasim Sajjad demanded foolproof security of FC and Rangers but weak security was provided that resulted in the criminal attack on the house.
The Shahzad Town police, however, registered a case (FIR No 92) under section 392/34 PPC on the complaint of Wasim Sajjad. The people engaged in the investigation have collected fingerprints of the suspects and sent to Nadra to identify them. The police, quoting statement of Wasim Sajjad, mentioned that cash to the tune of Rs20 million was taken away while 150 tolas of gold ornaments, 6 mobile phone sets, 5 wrist watches and a licenced Glock pistol were also taken away.
Evidence from the house indicated that three people entered the room. One was carrying 9mm rifle, the other a 30-bore pistol and the third was holding a dagger. The dacoits held the family hostage for one hour and 40 minutes, entered the farmhouse at 3.35am and left the place at 5.15am, the police sources, quoting preliminary investigation report, said.
According to the latest report, the people engaged in the investigation claimed that the police had made headway in the investigation after getting fingerprint report from Nadra of the dacoits.
