Agreement signed for Sino-Pak Joint International Laboratory at KU’s ICCBS

The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences, Karachi University, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the State Key Laboratory for Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Medicinal Resources, Guangxi Normal University, China, a press statement said on Wednesday.
It said both the institutions of China and Pakistan aimed to make joint efforts for the establishment of the Sino-Pakistan Joint International Laboratory for Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Medicinal Resources (SKLCMEMR), which is abbreviated as Sino-Pakistan Joint International Laboratory at the ICCBS.
According to the MoU, they will endeavor to encourage, promote and facilitate the collaboration between both the institutions. Scholars of the ICCBS will also be taught Chinese language. In particular, the institutions have agreed to develop their collaborative work by facilitating exchanges of academic staff and students, hosting the other academic staff and students as departmental visitors.
The MoU was signed in a ceremony held at the Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, KU. The president of the Guangxi Normal University, Prof Dr He Zu-Bin, SKLCMEMR Director Prof Dr Liang Hong, and ICCBS-KU Director Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary signed the agreement on behalf of their institutions.
Prof He Zu-Bin while introducing his institution said the Guangxi Normal University was founded in 1932. “Now the University has become an international hub of academic excellence and multi-cultural cooperation and relationships,” he said.
“The GXNU currently offers a variety of programmes and degrees for students of all levels and nationalities, and our academic programmes cover at least twelve different branches of learning,” he maintained. Dr He Zu-Bin said his university had already set Rs10 million aside on account of the international laboratory.
Prof Iqbal Choudhary said this MoU was signed to promote scientific and cultural cooperation between the two countries. He said the ICCBS was one of the country’s most eminent centres of excellence. “This international centre is considered a top one of the finest academic research establishments of chemical and biological sciences in the developing world,” he maintained. He said the ICCBS was the only institution in Pakistan which was not only certified by the ISO but it also became the ‘UNESCO Centre for Excellence Category-2 Institute’.
