KARACHI: Pakistan’s largest online portal Daraz.pk has changed the name of its popular sale event ‘Black Friday’ into ‘Big Friday’, company officials said.
Hammad Ravda, chief marketing officer of Daraz, said that Black Friday is an international event, but they wanted to create Pakistani version with the name of Big Friday.
Market sources; however, said that Daraz took the decision after serious resentment by different groups, including a resolution in the Punjab Assembly, expressing objections over using black with Friday, which is considered a religious day.
Daraz is offering discounts of up to 86 percent for seven days started from November 20, officials said. Daraz’s now Big Friday is expected to be the biggest event of the year, which went live on November 20 and running through the week of heavily discounted deals; flash sales and special offers.
Each day of the seven-day mega sale event will see new categories unlock. Daraz reveals that the big deal event that it pioneered in 2015 and bested in 2016 is going to get significantly bigger this year. Last year, Daraz recorded sales of more than Rs1 billion. Ravda did not disclose the total sales number, but said they received three times higher orders during the first three days of the event this year.
