CAPE TOWN: South Africa coach Ottis Gibson has chosen his support staff, and in the process, confirmed a clear-out of the back room team used by his predecessor Russell Domingo. Gibson had kept Domingo’s coaching staff on for his first full tour, but has now decided to bring in a fresh crew.
The all-South African coaching team includes Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa as Gibson’s assistant, former South Africa batsman Dale Benkenstein as the batting coach and former Proteas batsman Justin Ontong as the fielding coach. Claude Henderson is the only survivor from the Domingo era, retaining his role as the spin consultant.
Gibson had already announced in the wake of the Bangladesh tour that he would be taking over the role of fast bowling coach from Charl Langeveldt. The appointment of Maketa is a welcome one, given the appetite within South Africa to see more opportunities for black African coaches. As one of two such coaches at franchise level - Geoffrey Toyana being the other - Maketa will have the chance to take his career to the next level. The 37-year-old is popular among the players at the Warriors, having taken over the job of head coach at the franchise in difficult circumstances in December 2014.
