A towel factory in the city’s New Karachi Industrial Area was badly damaged as a fire ripped through the unit early on Thursday morning.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in the incident even though there were workers at the factory when the fire broke out. However, official estimates placed the monetary damage caused at over a million rupees.
NKIA Fire Station Officer (FSO) Abrar Sheikh said the first fire tender was rushed to the factory, Hill Exports, situated in NKIA’s Sector 12, at around 10:30am.
He said the cause of the fire was most likely an electric short circuit, adding that the blaze soon intensified and three more fire tenders were dispatched to help in rescue efforts. Thanks to tiresome efforts by firefighters, the blaze was completely extinguished within a span of three hours, said FSO Sheikh. The cooling process was underway at the unit.
He added that it was very fortunate that there were no casualties in the incident as the factory was full of workers when the fire erupted. The officer lauded the show of awareness by the factory management and workers, stating that their timely response had saved lives.
