A suspected extortionist who was also involved in robberies was gunned down by police in a shootout near Munawar Chowrangi in Gulistan-e-Jauhar in the wee hours of the day.
Sharea Faisal police said a police team was patrolling the area when they spotted two men riding a motorcycle.
When the two men were signalled to stop, they opened fire on the police.
In the retaliatory firing, one of the men was killed while his accomplice managed to escape.
The man killed in the encounter was identified as Iftikhar Bangash alias Iftikhari. A pistol was found on him.

‘Axe murderer’ held
A man who had axed his friend to death for using abusive language for his wife and then buried his body parts at his employer’s house in Block 7 of Gulshan-e-Iqbal has been arrested, police said on Tuesday.
SP Abid Qaimkhani said that acting on a tip-off they arrested Muhammad Ilyas from the house for killing Muhammad Imran Kamran and burying his body parts around the house.
“The accused told us that his friend and he were drinking at the house where he worked as a domestic help when the friend started using abusive language for his wife. The accused then picked up an axe and severed his friend’s neck, after which he cut up the body into pieces and buried them in different parts of the lawn.”
SP Qaimkhani said the house was owned by an elderly couple whose children lived abroad and they had hired Ilyas and his wife as domestic helps. The victim was an employee of a private hospital and often used to visit the accused.
