PESHAWAR: The Department of International Relations, University of Peshawar (UoP), is planning to set up a Centre for Refugees and Migration Studies with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). For the purpose, a two-member committee comprising Prof Dr Nasreen Ghufran of the University of Peshawar and UNHCR’s senior protection officer Maureen Master was formed to deliberate the proposal and work out modalities for the Centre. The decision was made during a visit of a four-member UNHCR delegation, led by Oscar Mundia, to the Department of International Relations. During a meeting with the department chairman Prof Dr Hussain Shaheed Soherwordi, dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Dr Taj Moharram, Dr Minhas Majeed Khan and other faculty members, the prospects of establishing the centre was discussed. Dr Nasreen Ghufran, in her presentation, said that the centre would be beneficial for the UNHCR for its effective policies and research-oriented decisions. She added that it would also benefit the minister for states and frontier regions in adopting the right policies towards refugees. The participants also discussed matters pertaining to Afghan refugee students studying at the University of Peshawar.
