100pc hike in onion price ahead of Eid

LAHORE :Over 100 per cent increase in the prices of onions has been recorded in the short span of only four weeks of time as the hoarders have started pushing the rates of the item well before Eidul Azha. 

Official price of onion on July 23 was only Rs 20 to 22 per kg which has now increased to Rs 45 to 47 per kg. Interestingly, during this period of time no shortage of onions has been recorded anywhere in the country while a good crop is also harvested and the country will not need to import it at any point of time during this crop season. Despite all these facts, the rates of onions are on the rise which will start coming down after Eidul Azha. The consumption of onion, tomato, and other vegetables increases manifolds during Eid days. The hoarders and stockiest have well planned to make money while the farmers and the consumers are the losers. 

There remained overcharging and unavailability of majority of vegetables and fruits in Sunday bazaars due to wrong pricing issue. The issue of wrong pricing of vegetables causes artificial price hike of these vegetables. 

Potato new was reduced by Rs 2 per kg, fixed at Rs 34 to 36 per kg, sugar free fixed at Rs 27 to 29 per kg, and stored at Rs 17 to 19 per kg and stored sold at Rs 36 per kg as the market committee officials themselves issued this rate to stored variety.

Onion price was further gained by Rs 3 per g, fixed at Rs 45 to 47 per kg, rainwater affected was sold at Rs 47 per kg. The price of tomato was also increased by Rs 13 per kg, reached at Rs 53 to 55 per kg, while rotten was sold at Rs 55 per kg, and good quality tomato was sold at Rs 80 per kg.

Garlic China was stable at Rs 126 to 130 per kg, and garlic local fixed at Rs 111 to 114 per kg, while all variety was sold at Rs 140 per kg. Ginger Chinese was fixed at Rs 141 to 146 per kg, Singaporean at Rs 97 to 100, sold at Rs 150 per kg.

The price of brinjal was reduced by Rs 10 per kg, fixed at Rs 17 to 18 per kg, was sold at Rs 20 per kg. Cucumber local was increased by Rs 5 per kg, fixed at Rs 38 to 40 per kg, and cucumber Farm by Rs 15 per kg, was fixed at Rs 63 to 65 per kg, both was sold Rs 65 per kg. Bitter gourd was stable at Rs 58 to 60 per kg, not sold in makeshift markets. Spinach was increased by Rs 13 per kg, fixed at Rs 23 to 25 per kg.

Lemon was declined by Rs 10 per kg, fixed at Rs 97 to 100 per kg, sold at Rs 100 to 140 per kg. Zucchini local was reduced by Rs 5 per kg, fixed at Rs 68 to 70 per kg, sold at Rs 80 per kg. Ladyfinger price was reduced by Rs 15 per kg, fixed at Rs 43 to 45 per kg, not sold there due to wrong price issue.

Pumpkin was also stable at Rs 38 to 40 per kg. Luffa was reduced by Rs 5 per kg, fixed at Rs 33 to 35 per kg, vendors hide it on wrong price issues while sold at Rs 60 per kg. Sweet pumpkin was fixed at Rs 4 to 5 per kg, sold at Rs 25 per kg.

Arum was declined by Rs 5 per kg, fixed at Rs 22 to 23 per kg, sold at Rs 30 per kg. Green chilli was stable at Rs 48 to 50 per kg, sold at Rs 60 to 80 per kg. Capsicum was gained by Rs 10 per kg, fixed at Rs 53 to 55 per kg, sold at Rs 60 per kg.

Coriander was reduced by Rs 30 per kg, fixed at Rs 240 per kg, sold at Rs 400 per kg. Beans were at Rs 60 per kg, sold at Rs 200 per kg. Different variety of apples was fixed at Rs 48 to 110 per kg, sold at Rs 80 to 120 per kg.

Banana A-quality was fixed at Rs 63 to 65 per dozen, and B-quality at Rs 38 to 40 per dozen but not sold in makeshift markets while outside B-grade was sold at Rs 60 to 70 per dozen.

Apricot white A-grade was fixed at Rs 88 to 90 per kg, not sold on wrong pricing issue. Different varieties of mangoes were sold at Rs 111 to 140 per kg, while sold at Rs 150 to 200 per kg. Plump was fixed at Rs 140 per kg, not sold there. Peer local was fixed at Rs 70 per kg. Hami melon (Garma) was fixed at Rs 50 per kg.

Peach A-grad was fixed at Rs 126 to 130 per kg, B-grade at Rs 68 to 70 per kg, mixed was sold at Rs 130 per kg.

Grapes Sundarkhani was fixed at Rs 155 to 160 per kg, mixed sold at Rs 160 to per kg, Grapes Bedana at Rs 88 to 90 per kg, and Grapes black Rs 141 to 146 per kg.

Guava was fixed at Rs 38 to 40 per kg, sold at Rs 80 per kg. Sweet Lime was fixed at Rs 73 to 75 per dozen, not sold in makeshift markets on wrong pricing issue.
