As the authorities concerned continue to turn a blind eye towards gender-based and domestic violence, two women lost their lives in separate incidents reported in the city on Monday.
In Surjani Town police limits, a woman died of severe head injuries after her husband pushed her off a flight of stairs at the couple’s house in Khuda Ki Basti. Surjani Town police SHO Ghulam Rasool Arbab identified the victim as 32-year-old Shazia and the killer as Shahid. He confirmed that the man had physically assaulted the victim and pushed her down a staircase.
The killer had been taken into custody, as per the SHO, and legal action had been initiated against him for the murder. Another possible case of gender-based and domestic violence was reported in the city’s Korangi area where a 60-year-old woman allegedly took her own life by self-immolation.
Inayaullah Marwat, the SHO of the area police, identified the victim as Shaheen, wife of Iftikhar, and said that her family was claiming that she had set herself on fire. The officer said the victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi’s Burns Centre but her wounds proved too severe and she was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Marwat said the victim’s family was claiming that Shaheen suffered from mental health issues and had been hospitalised for treatment previously too. However, the officer said police were investigating all possible aspects of the case and were not yet ruling out foul play.
