Four workers of metro train project injured
LAHORE
Four more labourers were severely injured in an incident during work at Orange Line Metro Train Project near Mandi Stop, Multan Road due to the missing safety gadgets on Tuesday.
The labourers were being shifted to the track through a puller lifted by a crane. Suddenly, the puller broke down and they fell to ground. They received fatal injuries and were shifted to hospital. The victims were identified as Rizwan, Shahid, Ijaz and Shahzad. Three of them were under 18 years of age.
Eye-witnesses, photos of the victims and footage showed that they were not wearing any safety gadgets exposing violation of workers safety protocols.
This is not the first incident in which the workers had fallen victim to poor working conditions at the project. The project has claimed over 25 lives so far.
On January 11, seven workers at work on the OLMT Project died and 14 others were injured in an incident of fire on the third floor of a makeshift residence near Mehmood Booti.
In May 2016, seven workers had died and several injured when a wall of a godown had collapsed on their makeshift residence near Manawan. The deceased were identified as Rashid, Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Usman, Zulfikar, Nadar, Muhammad Irfan, and Muhammad Maqbool.
In January 2016, two labourers were electrocuted while working on the Orange Line Metro Train project in the Chuhng area.
Muhammad Ashfaq had died on October 19, 2015 when he had lost control of a motorcycle he was driving as he tried to overtake on the wrong side a vehicle-mounted mixer.
He had fallen to the ground and was run over by the mixer vehicle. Azeem Ishaque had died in an accident on November 26. His death had also occurred in an accident involving the mixer vehicle.
He had lost balance of a motorcycle he was driving past the mixer vehicle when a sack of clothes he was carrying got stuck in the vehicle. He had fallen to the ground and was run over by the vehicle’s rear wheel.
Amanullah, a safety worker, was guiding an excavator when he slipped and was run over by the vehicle. He died on the spot.
Muhammad Sharif, a labourer hired by a sub-contractor, was walking past an excavator when he was hit by a motorcyclist. He lost balance and fell to the ground and was run over by the excavator.
