A man accused of murdering two renowned educationists was remaded in police custody for 14 days by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday.
Muhammad Mansoor was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in the murders of Karachi University’s Prof Dr Shakeel Auj and Liaquatabad College’s former principal Prof Sibte Jafar. Four other accused including Fahim Jabalpuri and Ehtesham, are absconding.
The police told the court the accused was believed to be affiliated with a political party and lived Liaquatabad. They said he had worked as a ward boy at the Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad.
The police requested the court to grant his custody for interrogation about the whereabouts of the absconders. The law enforcers said the prime suspect, Muhammad Mansoor, with another man, Faisal Khursheed, was also nominated in cases for the possession of explosives and illegal arms registered at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station. The ATC-II granted a seven-day physical remand of both suspects to the police.
Auj was the dean of Islamic Studies faculty at Karachi University and also the head of Usool-e-Deen department and the Sheikh Zaid Islamic Centre.
Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo had told the media that Mansoor had admitted to killing Auj with Fahim Jabalpuri and Ehtesham.
He had also claimed that he was an activist of a political party.
Thebo had said the accused was also involved in the murder of Prof Sibte Jafar who was known for his sozkhwani and marsia recitals. He had been gunned down in Liaquatabad.
