Adviser to the PM on National Security Sartaj Aziz unequivocally voiced Pakistan’s stance for regional harmony and maintaining a balance of power while openly opposing the US-India nuclear deal and India’s attempt for UNSC membership. China has already extended its support to Pakistan’s just stance against relaxing the safety standards in place regarding joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
The statement emphatically says that ‘Pakistan reserves the right to safeguard its national security interests’ in the wake of destabilising policy intentions about nuclear assistance. Pakistan also rightly expressed strong objections to US support for India’s bid for permanent membership of the Security Council on the ground that offering membership to a country that has been violating UNSC resolutions for decades is ridiculous. Moreover, Pakistan along with other countries is in favour of comprehensive reforms to make the UNSC more representative, democratic and effective for strengthening international peace and security.
