Rs3.04 million robbed in second bank heist in a week

Six robbers made away with Rs3.04 million from a private bank’s branch on Mauripur Road on Tuesday in what was the second bank heist in the city within the space of seven days.

SSP City Adeel Chandio told The News that six men entered the bank at 3:50pm and were done by 3:52pm. They only took away the cash available at the counter and did not make it to the main vault.

 Police said they had acquired the robbery’s CCTV footage and the suspects seemed to belong from Mianwali, they added.

The SSP maintained that a case was being registered and a hunt for the suspects was on after having ascertained their identities from the footage.

Taking notice of the fourth bank robbery in Karachi this year, Sindh Inspector General (IG) AD Khowaja sought a detailed report from DIG South. He also directed the DIG CIA to assist in arresting the robbers in light of evidences and staffer’s statements collected from the crime scene.

The first bank robbery in the city was reported on January 19 in which six robbers took away Rs 1.2 million from a bank in Gizri.

On April 19, five robbers made away with Rs1.2 million in the second bank heist from a bank located on the Rashid Minhas Road.

The third bank robbery was reported from the limits of Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police station. The robbers managed to make away with Rs 7.2 million from a bank situated at the Do Minute Chowrangi, on May 10.

So far the biggest robbery reported this year was of Rs12.3 million, looted from a money exchange’s cash van on April 20. The guard of a private security company was arrested for helping the other guards out on April 28.

The Samanabad police had on April 29 foiled a robbery bid and arrested three robbers from a private bank’s branch situated in Samanabad, Block 19.

In 2016, a total of 12 bank robberies were reported in the metropolis. Eight of the incidents were reported within the first four months of the year, while the other four took place over the course of the remaining eight months.
