Campaign for WHO elections discussed
Islamabad: Pakistan’s election campaign for the office of Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) was discussed at length Tuesday during a meeting between Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and Minister for National Health Services Saira Afzal. Saira expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the Foreign Office under the leadership of the Foreign Secretary to promote the country’s candidature. She said, the country’s candidate Dr. Sania Nishtar had been successful in the first round of the elections and it is being hoped that she would succeed in the final round to be held in Geneva during the last week of May. Tehmina shared details of efforts being made to promote Pakistan’s candidature for the position and discussed the campaign strategy for the final round. Other issues that came up during the meeting included Pakistan’s role at international health forums, the country’s performance in Polio Eradication, and efforts to improve immunization services.
