Scarcity of water

By our correspondents
April 23, 2017

The effects of climate change are quite visible now. The earth’s temperature is rising rapidly resulting in the melting of glaciers etc. This has led to floods, unexpected rainfall, food and water scarcity, etc. In Pakistan, the water crisis has taken a toll on the lives of the people. In many areas, the supply of water is close to zero. The main reason of this huge problem is the country’s inability to store water. It only has the ability to store water for 30 days only. While India has the ability to store water for 120-220 days, Egypt has the ability to store water for 1000 days. On the other hand, the US and Australia can store water for 900 and 600 days respectively. This statistics shows that Pakistan is far behind these countries. It is an unfortunate that the concerned authorities are not serious about dealing with the matter of the water crisis.

The country is an agricultural country. The agriculture sector contributes 60 percent to the country’s economy. If the water crisis is not tackled at the earliest, the economy will be affected. The media should play its due role in creating awareness among the people about global warming. The people should know how they can avert the wastage of resources. The ministry of climate change should focus on its goals and help the government in framing policies to tackle climate change.
