Officials accused of torturing man to death

LAHORE

A man accused 10 officials of Central Jail, Lahore, including the jail superintendent of torturing his brother to death.

Sheraz, a resident of Sultan Road, Mahmood Booti, filed an application with the Kot Lakhpat police station in which he told that his brother Sajjad, son of Zulfiqar, was sent to Central Jail on judicial remand in connection with a murder case registered against him at Harbanspura police station in 2008. The jail authorities did not produce him before the court on hearing on Wednesday as the family could not arrange Rs50,000 the jail superintendent and deputy superintendent demanded as bribe. He suspected that the jail authorities had murdered his brother. The complaint was filed against superintendent, deputy superintendent, two assistant superintendents, incharge barrack, and five others, including four constables.

Man hit to death: A 40-year-old man was killed by a speeding car near Suey Asil, Kahna on Wednesday. The victim, yet to be identified, was crossing road when a rashly-driven car hit him, resulting into his instant death. Police shifted the body to morgue.

suicide: A 22-year-old youth committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in the Manga Mandi area on Wednesday. He was identified as Zeeshan Zulfiqar. It was reported that youth, who had been despondent over domestic issues, locked himself up in a room and shot himself to death. Police handed over the body to the family.

accidents: Total 637 road traffic accidents were reported in Provincial Monitoring Cell of the Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) in all 36 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours; in which nine lives were lost and 551 serious injured were shifted to different hospitals of relevant districts and tehsils. However, some 192 victims, who sustained minor injuries, were discharged on the spot.
