A resident of New Muzaffarabad Colony was gunned down by his neighbour over failing to repay borrowed money, said a Quaidabad police official on Monday.
SHO Asmatullah Marwat told The News that 26-year-old Kamran Khan was loaned Rs250,000 by 22-year-old Arif Khan a few months ago and the former had paid back Rs100,000 two months back.
“On Sunday Arif asked Kamran to repay the next instalment of the borrowed money, but the latter refused to return the remaining amount,” said SHO Marwat.
“Upon this the two men had a heated argument, but both of them eventually returned to their houses,” added the police officer. “On Monday Arif insisted again that Kamran repay Rs150,000, but the latter continued to refuse the demand.”
Marwat said the two neighbours once more had a heated argument, which concluded with Arif opening fire at Kamran and injuring him. As the accused fled the scene, the locals took the injured to the Jinnah Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The SHO claimed that six cases of brawl were already registered against Kamran at the Quaidabad police station, saying that the victim was also accused of extortion. Kamran had also opened fire at a man during a fight and injured a minor girl, added Marwat.
The police officer said the victim was jailed for some of his crimes and was released six months ago, adding that his body was handed over to his father after completing all the medico-legal formalities.
He said the police had arrested the accused, Arif, and his 30-year-old brother Asif Khan, adding that the initial investigations revealed that Kamran had promised to repay the loan within a month, but he went back on his word.
SHO Marwat said the victim’s father, Rozi Khan, was counted among the locality’s respectable persons and had also served as councillor on the Awami National Party’s ticket during the previous city government.
